Synopsis

One windy summer day, an artist makes a horse sculpture out of the sand on the beach at St Ives. It takes him the whole day, and all the beach people admire it. But when everyone goes in at the end of the day, the Sand Horse can hear the white horses in the surf calling to him: 'Come with us to Sennen, Land's End, and Longships Light!,' and he longs to join them.
This haunting story was Ann Turnbull's first for Andersen Press, beautifully interpreted by Greenaway Medal Winner Michael Foreman.

What the critics say

Beautifully written and illustrated, …a perfect example of how a story can be firmly rooted in reality and yet float gently off and develop into an irresistible fantasy.

- Sally Grindley

A poetic and haunting picture book.

- The Signal

Picture books of this calibre are rare and we cannot recommend this one more highly.

- Books for Children

The best children's book illustrations he has ever done.
- Observer

Ann Turnbull’s story of art and liberty is a simple yet affecting tale. The plight of the sand horse is moving for all that it is inanimate and its wild joy once transformed is almost infectious. Furthermore, the story is brought joyously to life by the evocative illustrations of Michael Foreman, a resident of St Ives.
