Which ebook format should I choose?

What is it?
ePub is a standard ebook format that has flowable text which is designed so that the reader can have control over how they choose to read a text, with no matter what device they're using. You can easily change font size, style, or page sizes and the document will reflow appropriately.

Do I need any special software or hardware?
ePub can be read on a PC or Laptop with Adobe Digital Editions which can be downloaded for free from here. ePub is also used on the Sony Reader, a dedicated ebook reading device. Adobe Digital Editions is actively working on supporting other platforms and devices. Further information can be found on their website.

Note: ebooks purchased on rBooks are not compatible with mobile devices such as the iPhone, iTouch, iPad and Google Android.

Adobe Reader .PDF

What is it?
Adobe Reader PDF is a fixed format digital version of a book. PDF was developed to preserve formatting and make electronic documents look exactly like paper ones. The text can be resized on some reading devices, but the page breaks remain in their original place as opposed to reflowing. It is possible to zoom and pan on a document using Adobe Reader.

Do I need any special software or hardware?
Adobe Reader PDFs can be read on Adobe Digital Editions and on Adobe Reader. You can use desktop and laptop computers, some smartphones, Palm devices and the Sony Reader to view PDFs. Check with your device manufacturer to see if your device is compatible. For desktop and laptop users, Adobe Digital Editions allows more ways to interact with your PDF ebook.

Step by Step guide to purchasing an ebook on rBooks

In order to view your ebook you will need to download and register Adobe Digital Editions which can be downloaded for free from here. epub is also used on the Sony Reader, a dedicated ebook reading device. What are the system requirements for this software?

Windows Vista, XP, and 2000 and Mac OSX 10.4 are compatible with Adobe Digital Editions and Adobe Reader.

Internet Explorer 6 , Mozilla Firefox 2 , Safari2 are all compatible.

How do I purchase an ebook on rBooks.co.uk
1. Browse rbooks.co.uk by viewing suggested titles here or performing a search, using the search box.
2. Once you have found your ebook(s), click on ‘add to basket’ from the product page.
3. You will now have a choice of formats to purchase i.e. epub or pdf (if only one format is showing, the other format is unavailable).

Please ensure you are purchasing the correct format for the unit you will be using your ebook on. If you need any help identifying which format to choose, please read the information at the top of this page.

If a format is not selected before clicking on ‘Add to basket’, the page will refresh and the following message appears: ‘You must choose a format before adding the product to your basket.’


4. Add further titles to your basket and continue through the checkout process.

- The availability message for any ebook will state: ‘Available for immediate download.’
- ‘Free P&P to any UK address on orders over £25’ will not include ebooks.  

5. If you are only purchasing ebooks, after logging in or registering, you will be taken to the invoice address page, leaving out the delivery address page.  This is because delivery address is not required.  However, if you are purchasing physical books, too, the delivery page will be displayed.
6. Once your payment has been accepted (usually in a matter of seconds), a page will be displayed with your confirmed purchase and order number.
7. If you are based outside the UK, your order will not be accepted and a message will be displayed stating this.
8. This is your receipt and you can print this page for your records.
9. You will receive an ‘order receipt’ email which will detail your purchase along with details of delivery. If you are purchasing solely ebooks, please ignore the delivery details.
10. You will receive a second email – ‘order dispatch’ which will confirm your ebook order and give instructions on how to download your ebook.
11. Navigate to the ‘My Account’ section on the rBooks.co.uk website and click on ‘My ebooks’.
12. If you have not already installed Adobe Digital Editions, you will be prompted to do so. Please ensure you create an Adobe Digital Editions account.
13. Once installed, you will now see your list of ebooks, which you can click to download.
14. If you are using a dedicated ebook device the files will need to be downloaded and then manually moved to your device.
15. Once you have finished downloading your ebook, if you have more ebooks to download continue clicking on each download link.
16. You can download each ebook three times maximum.
